To really understand nonviolence, it is important to acknowledge the existence of agape love and its distinction from the other types of love. When people talk about "loving your enemy" we are not suggesting that you try to cultivate the same loving feelings that you have for your friends. That would make no sense and it may not be possible.
We don't have to hang out with our worst enemies in the way we hang out with our friends. We don't have to invite them over for the holidays. we might not choose to spend any time with them at all, but we do have to acknowledge their humanity. We do have to understand that they are not that different from us, and we do have to work toward a world where we can all achieve our full potential. If someone is hurting you or actively participating in injustice, chances are they have not achieved their potential as a human being, and we can try to cultivate compassion for that. - Kazu Haga, from "Healing Resistance, A Radically Different Response to Harm" Comments are closed.
